_ quiet quiet quiet
as always, I have been writing new material...and the other I started recording something new that sounds really great, got me quite excited about the possibilities of a collaboration. I'm afraid there still won't be new material to hear for a while yet; I paused the recording process to work on a live band, which has been slow to start up. But I have personnel, just no time. So once that is sorted, recording shall commence and I'll return with some demos, methinks, nothing too fancy, just something to whet your appetite and hand to promoters, reviewers and publishers alike.

Queen Boadicea last night was good fun, very last minute but still...really enjoyed mini sets from Andy Flight and Pint Size MC - great stuff. Also enjoyed main set from Bob Dylan guy, didn't catch his name.
I have another last minute gig tonight, it's at Escape Bar - full details to be found at http://www.williamecho.com.
Oh, and I couldn't resist posting a video of this post's namesake....love it. No complaints for my risque humour though or I'll set the comedy police on you. Fawlty Zenophobia one week, Family Satyriasis the next...

things have been quite quiet (don't those two words look good together?) here...apologies for the lack of posting. I have been writing new songs, working on old ones, and generally psyching myself up for live gigs. I'm playing at the Constitution in Camden this Friday, come along and chances are you'll probably hear a new song =] Details on www.williamecho.com

I'll be playing at The Constitution in Camden, which by all accounts is a nice little pub by a river that hosts some great live music. It's on Friday 21st November and it would be great to see lots of people there, as ever. I'll let you know about the other gig once I know more. In the meantime I'll just admire the snow falling outside.
*edit*
I'm playing this Sunday (2nd November) at the Cross Kings in Kings Cross...within walking distance of the station. So, you could even pop over from France on the Eurostar, see me play for FREE and then get a train back to Europe. Or you could just get the Tube there and get in for free...
Did I mention it was free? It's free entry. Get there for 8pm!

_ new new new!
Alsooo...I've been working on a new design. Now listen, I know, there have been more colour schemes and layouts for William Echo pages (MySpace, A&M, William Echo.com, etc) than there have top secret disks been lost by the government, BUT this is a good one, trust me (or I wouldn't even be writing about it here....you don't even know the HALF of it, the number of designs discarded into digital wasteland). It just the natural progression for someone with a deep interest for web design, typography and..general geekiness. To whet your voracious appetite, here be a little snapshot of things to come. Comments please, good and bad (although it did take God knows how many hours, so be kind)

_ the start of something new
And that's just what I'll do! With loads of new songs from the summer, lots of ideas recorded on my phone, and a lot of new inspiration, I've decided to start recording a new album. Yes- ALBUM, full-length.....well that's the idea anyway. And it's going to be kept under wraps, so unfortunately there will be yet more silence from me for a while to come... But fear not! I shall be hard at work, and when you hear from me again it will be nothing short of GLORIOUS. Or that's the plan at least.
I plan to keep you updated with little videos, snippets of ideas, random shizzle, so don't worry, it won't all be silent. But work has already begun, new ideas being thrown about, and while I plan to keep you in the loop somewhat I want you all to be stunned when I release the first single.
I'll be doing it all myself once again, no major label backing...but I hope to impress nonetheless. That rhymes. See? My creativity is just pouring out.

Made friends with a couple of decent blokes from the Isle of White band Gweido - who got up at 4am to get the ferry and get into London for the auditions! I do not envy them. Oh, and a hello to Purple Bubble who I finally met yesterday after (apparently not) talking to them online (and talking to their PA instead, pretending to be them..!?). Thanks for the beer guys, it was needed.

_ a big fat thank you

Well, I just felt that all that is left to say is
THANK YOU :)
to all the great people who have given me such good feedback on my music, and all the great people who have voted for me - people I've never met before. Imagine that. It's almost as if my music is finally being appreciated by a wider audience!
Well, here's hoping I get through, make the big-time and get to thank you more personally, possibly in the way of bakey-cakey-goodness (no not with Nutrigrain bars, they're not that nice), or just a big piss-up-after-party. Who knows.
In any case, no matter what happens, it's been invaluable to hear your comments and reviews on my music - oh, and did I say thank you to everyone who voted for me?

_ 24-inch iMac: 2.8GHz of media-loving fun
I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new 24-inch 2.8GHz 2GB memory all-singing-all-dancing Apple iMac =D It will help HUGELY in mixing and producing at home. It will mean no more lack of sunlight, living in Bombshelter Studios, no more *hoping* that there will be a studio free on downtime. I'll be able to record at Bombshelter, then come back home and mix mix mix the night away...
SO...hopfully it will arrive in time for the Lowland Games, in time for me to make my own god-damn electronic drum backing track sample thinger.
You can rely on no-one but yourself.
Remember that my friend........................
On a more musical note, I have plenty of new songs that I cannot wait to play live. Some of the titles include:
A Carnival Of Black
Where We Belong
Pleased To Please You
Things Will Change
No Man Is An Island (Except Me)
Plus a veritable album of unfinished ideas, odds & ends, as mentioned in a previous post. Expect much fun, frolics and comedy covers at the Lowland Games in a couple of weekends. Ok, one comedy cover.

_ knife crime.
It's everywhere recently. You read the papers, it's there. You turn on the TV, and its another figure, statistic, a growing number on the tally chart of young people knifed for the most trivial of reasons. It's something that's impossible to ignore. Just take a look at the Google search of 'BBC' and 'knife crime'. Much of it is from this year alone. The danger is that after a while the term 'knife crime' - much like 'gun crime' and any other type of crime - becomes just a buzz word. It even shifts the blame away from the individual and onto the knife.
I think as a country, Britain is becoming engulfed by this...and to be honest, sometimes I can't tell if it's hysteria or a genuine rise in incidents. I don't say this to belittle the problem; I just have a deep mistrust of anything the media swing my way, and believe you can't know the absolute truth unless you go out there for yourself and make your own findings (much like Al Gore, but that's another story...). But in the end, the papers are not making it up, and there's a sick problem out there.
The thing is, it's not exactly anything new. Teddy boys of the 50s were renowned for their razor blade and knife brandishing and use. It's a whole culture that revolves around bravado, intimidation, and turning to weapons to give certain people a sense of power and control over their (and others') lives that they may not otherwise have. Did you watch 'Fallout' on C4 the other night? It was right;
"People talk about the 'war on the streets' - but they're wrong, there is no war, because wars have an end and this just goes on and on and on."
It's a cycle, with so many factors involved. Lack of money, lack of motivation, lack of hope. No aspiration, and a belief that their life is stuck on one level. Those that attack others do so not because they have power, but because they see a certain power in others; it's a fear that while others succeed, they'll get left behind. How will it end? Who knows if it will ever end. There's always been people like that, and there always will be. There's no black without white, and no good without bad. It's just making damn sure they don't outnumber the ones who have a chance of making it out of there.
Ok, well here's a little something I wrote, thought I'd get all this off my chest in one big blog post. Oh, and here's a clue if you're still puzzled at the end: tally.
The Drip Drip Drop
The drip drip drop
The sound of another
A childless mother
Four lines,
The drip drip drop
When will it stop?
We're all at a loss
One across.
The drip drip drop
A city disease
Deaf to the pleas
Four lines,
The drip drip drop
A failing crop
Life became a cost
One across.
The drip drip drop
The animals run
To the sound of guns
Four lines,
The drip drip drop
How can it stop?
We're all at a loss
One across.
Your thoughts please (and I mean the issue, not the poem!)

_ bits & pieces
The only trouble is I never remember I recorded them in the first place! The other night, however, struggling to get to sleep, I decided to listen back to the bits & pieces I had recorded over the past 6 months, and you know what? I reckon I have about an album's worth of new and unfinished material just on my phone - plus new songs I have been writing over the past few weeks.
It's been really quiet recently, I'm so used to being in the studio and having new songs to put on MySpace and generally rant about on the internet...but the studios I record in are shut until September (or even possibly October!), so I think I'll use it as time to write songs, get new ideas, and come ready at the start of the new academic year with an arsenal of songs to record. I'm also still trying to put together this live show - some people are proving elusive and others extremely willing & helpful. Slowly but surely I'll sort something out. I have to! I'm playing at the Lowland Games at the end of July and I want it to be spectacular. Or at least mildly interesting. ;-)

_ motion picture moods
I did some film music recently, as part of my university degree. I thought I'd share the results with everyone online - I'm thinking, it's still William Echo music, right?
Anyway, the brief was to write music for film (the default film given was Love Is The Devil with Daniel Craig and Derek Jacobi - wiki entry here) - I was unimaginative and chose the default film for the course. I had 2 assignments, both to do 10 minutes of music. For the first one I used MIDI instruments and tweaked the EQs and added plugins to make them sound as realistic as possible. For the second assignment, I wanted to use some real instruments - but was pushed for time. So, I ended up recording and layering electric guitar and mixing it with a little MIDI, and recorded some MIDI piano for a cartoon I found online. If the owner of the cartoon is reading this, please don't sue me :D I tried to make this a bit like a silent film, but with Rachmaninov and Liszt influences/rip-offs.
All the intruments and sounds are performed by me, written in Logic 8 in about a week. Enjoy!

_ a twisted logic
A shoe-maker makes a shoe. It's a very pretty shoe indeed. However, when it goes on sale, it's actually a very uncomfortable shoe. Lots of women can't actually fit their feet into this pretty shoe, so, surely, he can't be a very good shoe-maker after all? Surely it means that the shoe is never bought, the reputation is destroyed and the cobbler goes out of business because, after all, what else is a shoe made for than to be worn?
But this is 2008 and it seems it's not the shoe-maker's fault after all, it's the feet. Of course. So the feet don't fit the pretty shoe; what options are there?
Foot surgery it seems. Yes, it's true. If the shoe don't fit, fix the foot. I feel almost as if I've been thrown sideways into a backwards parallel universe.
Oh, but fear not. It does all make sense. Honest. That shoe-maker I told you about? It's Jimmy Choo. Or Manolo Blahnik. Or countless other magic cobblers. See? It all becomes crystal clear now doesn't it.
